The Miracle Celebrates Another Year!

This photo was taken in January of this year. Magellan was paralyzed from the waist down, weak, pathetic and near death.  The Vet had sent me home with some heart medication after paying a TON of money to have an echo cardiogram done on him.  (that is why there is a shaved spot you see in the photo) The prognosis was that I would spend the next week or so saying my goodbyes to a cat I have had since the day he was born. He had a serious heart defect and they were stunned he lived past the age of two with it.

I was told if he was the same at his next appointment I needed to do the humane thing and put him to sleep.

I was heart broken but refused to give up when HE was not giving up.  As long as he was still eating, grooming and dragging himself to the catbox and purring and not complaining I was willing to go the distance with him.

One night was particularly hard.  He was so weak he would fall over and not be able to even sit up. He was struggling to breath and so far gone that I truly believed he was going to die that night.

I laid on the bed with him on my chest and cried softly.  I told him it was ok to stop fighting so hard and to rest now. I said my goodbyes.  At one point he fell over, reached a paw up and clung fiercely to my shoulder, took a ragged breath and then went limp. No breathing, no movement, totally flaccid. I started crying hard, petting him, hugging him, my heart broken.  Then 30 seconds or more later he gasped for air and snapped out of it!  He did that twice that night! I was drained emotionally and scared to put him down and have him die alone.

He finally stood up on wobbly front legs and let me know he was done snuggling and would like to be put down again. Not being able to walk, I took him into his little area I had fixed up for him. He dragged his hind legs to the catbox and then to eat and then curled up on his little blanket and purred himself to sleep.

I was spent! I was a wreck! I knew I was going to lose him any day now and it was 2 am and now I could not sleep.  I actually got chewed out by the drunken mess that had laid next to me the entire time this two hour death watch took place. He was oblivious to any of it and angry that I woke him with my crying?! Obviously he missed the day they handed out empathy.

Anywhoooooo the next day Magellan seemed actually stronger. Dragging himself further and tired of being cooped up in the bedroom. By the next week he was walking on all four legs!! The blood clot that had paralyzed him had broken up and the Vet was stunned at the next appointment that not only were we NOT putting him down as discussed but that he was recovering so well.

Today Magellan turned 11 years old!! He is spunky, demanding, hungry all the time and can run, jump and play like nothing ever happened!! He does take medicine every day to keep the blood clots down and the heart problem at bay but he is here by my side, purring. It is the birthday the vets said he would never make it to.  A miracle!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MIRACLE KITTY!!! I LOVE YOU!!!!
